Kluna Tabbed as GNAC Player of the Week

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's junior pitcher Maddie Kluna (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle), the 2011 GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, has collected Conference Player of the Week honors.

Kluna appeared in two of the Monks' three tourney tilts with a win in the quarterfinal round and a save in the conference championship game. She fanned six and allowed two earned runs off eight hits and a walk in a 6-5 quarterfinal win over Simmons College on Friday and struck out both batters she faced in the conference title contest against Rivier College on Sunday.

A 2011 Second Team All-GNAC honoree, Kluna is 13-3 with a 2.15 ERA and 116 strikeouts – against just 16 walks – in 101 innings pitched. She is just the sixth pitcher in program history to reach the 100-strikeout mark in a season and her current K/7 ratio, 8.0, is the second-highest in SJC Softball annals.

As of May 4th, Kluna ranks 28th in all of NCAA DIII Softball with 8.0 strikeouts per seven innings and 33rd with 1.11 walks per seven frames.

Saint Joseph's (34-8, 21-3 GNAC) claimed the GNAC Championship crown for the first time in four seasons as a member of the conference with a 5-4 win over Rivier on Sunday and, with the title and subsequent automatic qualifier, will advance to the NCAA DIII Softball Tournament which begins on May 11th. National tournament seedings will be announced on Monday.
