Dunn Claims First Team Academic All-District Honors

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's softball standout Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle) has garnered Capital One District 1 Softball First Team All-Academic honors.

Dunn, the starting first baseman and a team captain for the Monks, is now eligible for even higher academic honors as all First Team recipients advance to the Capital One Academic Team ballot, where first, second and third team members will be selected later this month.

A two-sport athlete and four-year starter for the SJC field hockey and softball programs, Dunn has played in 236 athletic contests while taking courses as a Pre-Medicine major. She is a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic honoree and has garnered Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and North Atlantic Conference (NAC) All-Academic honors twice during her career.

Dunn has now been listed on the Academic All-District Team three times in her career, as she claimed Third Team honors as a sophomore and Second Team accolades as a junior. Athletes are selected for academic acclaim by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District 1 includes colleges and universities in New York and New England and the College Division encompasses all DII and DIII institutions in those states.

Also a three-time GNAC Softball All-Conference honoree, Dunn is currently hitting .366 (49-134) with 24 runs, nine doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI and has not made an error in 290 chances for the Monks' softball team, which recently won the conference championship and will advance to the NCAA DIII Tournament for the first time in program history.

She ranks third in SJC softball history in career hits (182), fourth in doubles (42) and fifth in RBI (117).

Dunn joins Simmons senior infielder Annie Thompson as one of two players from GNAC institutions to receive the First Team academic award. Only two players, Maine senior infielder Terren Hall being the other, were recognized on the All-Academic teams.

To be eligible for nomination by a CoSIDA member at their institution, the player must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 at his/her present institution, participate in at least 50 percent of the team's games, and have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Saint Joseph's (34-8, 21-3 GNAC) will host Husson University at 1:00 PM on Sunday. NCAA DIII Tournament pairings will be announced on Monday and regional tourney play begins on Wednesday.

CoSIDA selects Academic All America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at large and women's at large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.
