SAINT JOSEPH'S OPENS ON THE ROAD AT MIT TIP OFF CLASSIC

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - MIT fell to Maine Maritime Academy, 78-63, in the championship game of the 2005 MIT Women's Basketball Tip Off Classic. In the consolation game, Gordon College defeated St. Joseph's College (Maine), 69-60. Earning All-Tournament Team honors was Kristen Helgesen (Gordon), Julia Knights (Maine Maritime), Kaylin Regula (St. Joseph's), and Kimberly Eri Soo Hoo (MIT). Alysa Burns of Maine Maritime was selected as the Tournament MVP. points and seven caroms.

In the consolation game, like the championship match-up, the first-half was a back-and-forth affair as there were four ties and seven lead changes. St. Joseph's held a three-point advantage (10-7), which was its largest of the game, at 15:20. A lay-up by Gordon's Amy Dodd followed by a pair of free-throws from Beth Pinkham put the Fighting Scots ahead. A lay-up from the Monk's Kaylin Regula was countered by a pair of free-throws from Kristen Helgesen, which gave Gordon the lead for good with 11:39 left in the half. A jumper by Sarah Weeks at the buzzer gave the Fighting Scots a 45-30 advantage at the intermission.

Despite facing a 16-point deficit (58-42) with 8:19 remaining the in game, St. Joseph's battled back during the next five minutes and cut the lead to 63-58 on a lay-up from Regula. Pinkham ended the Monks' run with a jumper at the 2:37 mark.

Helgesen recorded a game-high 24 points for Gordon (1-1) on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Weeks tallied 14 points while Dodd totaled 13 points and nine assists. Pinkham and Mariwyn Light rounded out the scoring with 10 and eight points, respectively. For St. Joseph's (0-2), Brittany Rauscher notched 17 points while Marie Lint recorded 14 on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Regula finished with 13 points and a game-high eight boards and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
