Saint Joseph’s Takes Down Newbury

STANDISH, MAINE - Kaylin Regula (Windham, Me.) celebrated "Senior Night" with a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds as St. Joe's (8-16) defeated Newbury College 55-45. Senior Danielle Somma (Gray, Me.) turned in a strong defensive effort and chipped in with 4 points, 4 boards and 3 assists. The Nighthawks closed out their season at 3-21.

Both teams started off slowly and went into the break with the Monks holding a slim 23-22 lead. Saint Joe's outscored the Nighthawks 10-0 to begin the second stanza and senior Randi Hardiman (Loudon, NH) made two free throws at 14:31 for Newbury's first points of the half. Hardiman went on to score a team high 22 points.

The St. Joe's lead swelled to 20 points, but senior Devon Frazier (Brimfield, Mass.) converted a three-point play to start a Nighthawk rally with 6:41 to play. Sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques (Providence, R.I.) put a stop to the 9-0 Newbury run with a lay-up at 4:12 and Regula followed with a jumper to put the Monks up by 16. The Nighthawks would get no closer than 10 points over the final minutes of the period as St. Joe's (8-16) secured the victory. Sophomore Marie Lint (Orono, Me.) finished with 14 points and 9 boards while first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, Me.) turned in her finest performance of the season with 5 points, 9 boards, 9 steals and 7 assists.

Junior Taraja Laws (Easton, Pa.) pulled down 15 boards for Newbury, while senior Danielle Wisniowski (Kensington, Ct.) and Frazier had 9 points apiece.

Saint Joseph's College hosts the Association of DIII Independents Northeast Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 25, and will take on St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn at 2 p.m. The championship game will be played on Sunday, February 26, at 12 noon.
