St. Joe's Women Earn Victory on "Think Pink" Night

STANDISH, ME - St. Joe's defeated GNAC rival Daniel Webster College, 69-53, and over $200 from gate proceeds was donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund on "Think Pink" night at Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday evening. SR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) led her team with 16 points and 9 boards in the win. SJC improves to 15-7 overall and 8-3 in GNAC play while Daniel Webster falls to 9-13 overall and 2-9 in conference contests.

Saint Joseph's led 16-4 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half after FY Kayla Boston (North Berwick, ME) made a jumpshot to cap an 11-2 run to help stake the early lead. The St. Joe's women extended their lead to 17 points with under 5 minutes remaining in the first after JR Liz Jordan (Sandwich, ME) grabbed a loose ball and raced to the hoop for a lay-in. The Royal Blue took a 32-19 lead into recess.

Saint Joseph's College student Amanda Castonguay (Jay, ME) made a tremendous statement during the break by having her head shaved in a show of support for breast cancer awareness at center court in a very uplifting scene as the crowd rose for a standing ovation. Castonguay began collecting pledges for "Goin' Bald for Bucks," part of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, two weeks ago and received nearly $850 in donations for her courageous effort. The senior will donate her full head of hair to "Locks of Love," and the total amount raised from her pledges will go directly to the Roswell Institute.

In addition, Megan Farrell showed her support for the cause by donating over 12 inches of her own hair to "Locks of Love."  A friend cut the senior captain's hair during the break as the SJC women rallied around her in a show of support.

The St. Joe's offense didn't skip a beat in the second half as the Royal Blue went on to lead by as much as 28 points after SO Meghan Daigle (Grantham, NH) hit a jumper off a pass from FY Erin Cartwright (Acton, MA) to stake a 55-27 lead.

The Eagles mounted a 12-2 run late in the half, highlighted by 5 points from SR Erin Moseley (Sterling, MA), but the surge proved to be too little, too late for the Daniel Webster squad as St. Joe's came away with the victory.

SO Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME) tallied 10 points and 7 rebounds and teammate Meghan Daigle chipped in with 8 points in the victory. SO Allison Miner (Pembroke, NH), SR Marie Lint (Orono, ME) and Erin Cartwright each netted 6 points.JR Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) and Miner each collected 3 steals and Liz Jordan grabbed 4 steals in the contest.
