St. Joe’s Women St. Joe's Women Hold off Fighting Scots, 58-45

STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Women's Basketball team faced CCC opponent Gordon College Fighting Scots on Tuesday and earned their third consecutive win, 58-45. The women were led offensively by SO Meghan Daigle (Grantham, NH) with 10 points and 7 rebounds and SO Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME) who added 16 points and grabbed 6 boards in the win. With the victory, St. Joe's record improves to 3-1 while Gordon College drops to 1-3.

Both teams started the game off cold offensively. SO Meghan Daigle's hard work in the lane produced St. Joe's only bucket in the first four and a half minutes as the team went just 1-8 from the floor in this time span. The poor shooting seemed contagious as the Scots started out 1-7 and didn't score their second basket until nearly eight minutes had passed in the first half. After ten minutes, Gordon was in the lead by a 12-6 score.

After a torrid opening 10 minutes, St. Joe's put their offense together and went on an 11-0 run highlighted by a big three-pointer by Caroline Freeman and some clutch free throw shooting by JR Liz Jordan (Sandwich, MA) off the bench. SJC had few defensive breakdowns in the game and was able to keep Gordon scoreless during the run with some help from Freeman who grabbed a pivotal steal and a taken charge by SR Marie Lint (Orono, ME). Behind their improved shooting efforts and the stingy defense, St. Joe's managed to take a 27-20 lead into the half.

In the first half, Gordon College's Sara Schwanke kept them in the game offensively going 4-4 from the field and scoring 8 points. The Scots' Rebecca Carrol cleaned up the boards, getting 5 rebounds and picking up 4 points. Saint Joseph's JR Alyson Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) notched 6 points, 3 assists and 3 steals and played a key role in the team's early lead.

Saint Joseph's College came out in the second half looking to improve their shooting and accomplished just that, as they shot 52% from the floor in the latter stanza. SJC would extend the lead to 17 with a big three-pointer from SO Katie Gagnon (Portland, ME) 12 minutes into the half. JR Liz Jordan netted 6 of her 8 points in the second half. Sharpshooter Carolyn Freeman scored 7 of her 16 points in the second frame for St. Joe's. Gagnon played well off the bench for Head Coach Deb Reardon, grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out 2 helpers in limited duty.

For Gordon College, Rebecca Carroll had 12 points and 7 rebounds, and Sara Schwanke shot 50% from the floor and put up 17 points.

St. Joe's held a considerable rebound advantage in the game, outworking the Scots in the paint by a 45-31 margin. Gordon particularly struggled in their own zone, grabbing only 8 offensive boards in the game.

Saint Joseph's College next plays at home on Friday, 11/30 at 5:00 PM vs. The College of St. Joseph (VT) in the opening game of the Merry Monk Classic.
