Green Mountain Edges Saint Joseph's, 51-48
STANDISH, ME - The last game of the Merry Monk
Classic featured the Green Mountain College Eagles and host Saint
Joseph's College. The Eagles ended the back and forth battle on
top, 51-48. Both teams won their opening games on Friday night in
the classic format, with Green Mountain topping UMPI, 49-47, and
St. Joe's besting the College of St. Joseph, 66-60.
Green Mountain was led offensively in the game by forwards
Millicent Hopper and Christina Chamberlin as both scored 17 points
in the Eagles win. Chamberlin also grabbed 14 rebounds to earn a
double-double. The Eagles' Emma Buckley added 10 boards and 6
blocked shots in the winning effort.
SO Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME/McAuley HS)
sank six 3-pointers in the game and topped all SJC scorers with her
season and game high 20 points. She also added 8 rebounds in the
game. Allison Miner led her team in boards with 9
in the losing bid.
Both teams started off slowly, with neither squad scoring in the
first two and a half minutes. SJC forward Allison
Miner (Pembroke, NH) ended the drought, hitting two free
throws after being fouled by Eagles forward Millicent Hopper. FY
Erin Cartwright (Acton, MA) scored for St. Joe's
to put her team up 4-1 and JR Alysn Ludwig
(Waldoboro, ME) stole a pass from GMC's Brittany Holden, drove down
the court and sank a lay-up to make the score 6-1.
St. Joe's would make the lead 18-16 with eight minutes remaining in
the half after JR Liz Jordan (Sandwich, MA) hit a
jumper. Three minutes later the Eagles went on an 11-0 run, led by
7 points from forward Christina Chamberlin, to make the GMC lead
31-23 going into halftime.
Erin Cartwright ignited the start of the second
half offensively for St. Joe's, hitting two jump shots to make the
score 31-28 GMC and bring her team within three points.
Carolyn Freeman sank two 3-pointers to maintain
the three point deficit with the score 37-34 at the 12:36 mark. The
Eagles Katie Jablonski countered Freeman's three
with one of her own to increase GMC's lead to six.
On the next St. Joe's possession, with the shot clock winding down,
Liz Jordan would beat the buzzer with a jumper and
Freeman would drain yet another 3 ball on the
following trip down the court to pull within a point, 42-41
GMC.
Freeman continued her hot hand from three-point
land when she give St. Joe's the lead, 47-46, with less than 4
minutes left. SJC couldn't hold onto the lead, however, as the
Eagles' Brittany Holden would hit both of her free throw attempts
and Millicent Hopper would hit a jumper to put GMC up 50-47. Both
teams made single free throw attempts to make the final score
51-48, Green Mountain.
Both St. Joe's and Green Mountain now have a season record of
4-2.

12/1/07 - UMPI Owls Soar Past the College of Saint Joseph,
62-48
STANDISH, ME - The University of Maine-Presque Isle
Owls faced off against the College of Saint Joseph Fighting Saints
in the Merry Monk Classic and won, 62-48. Leading the way for the
Owls was junior forward Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME/Greely HS) with
a game high 19 points. Davis also worked in the paint for 10 boards
to achieve a double-double for the game and nearly reached
triple-double status as she grabbed 8 steals. UMPI improves to 1-4
with their first win of the young season, while the College of
Saint Joseph falls to 2-5.
Irene Tompkins reached double digits in both points (16) and
rebounds (game high 14) to lead the Fighting Saints and notch the
double-double in the losing effort. Tompkins also put up a
double-double in the team's first game of the Monk Classic vs. St.
Joe's on Friday night. Tahara Pleasure played well for CSJ as well
as she scored 11 points, shooting 3-4 from the floor and 5-8 from
the charity stripe.
Four UMPI Owls reached double-digit point figures, highlighted by
Davis' 19 points. Megan Korhonen scored 15 points and teammates
Anna Lenentine and Julie Wescott (Westbrook, ME) each put up 10
points in the game.
