STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Women's
Basketball team made 45% of their field goal attempts en route to a
70-47 victory over conference opponent Pine Manor College on
Wednesday evening. SO Meghan Daigle (Grantham, NH)
netted 15 points in the win. With the victory St. Joe's improves to
14-6 overall and 7-2 in GNAC play. The Pine Manor Gators fall to
6-13 overall and 2-7 in conference contests.
St. Joe's used nifty passing in the transition game to stake an
early lead. SJC led 16-6 at the 12:45 mark after SO
Allison Miner (Pembroke, NH)
grabbed a defensive board, hurled the ball downcourt to SO
Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME)
who immediately dished the ball to a wide-open FY
Casey Drake (Lebanon, NH) who was
camped out under the hoop and hit a layup to complete the
lightning-quick tic-tac-toe play.
SJC used a 25-2 run, highlighted by a tenacious defensive effort
that resulted in eight Gator turnovers, to go up 33-8 with four
minutes remaining in the first half. Daigle and FY
Erin Cartwright (Acton, MA)
combined to score 11 points in the 10 minute swing that helped St.
Joe's post a 28-point lead, 45-17, at halftime.
Despite a better shooting performance and 16 second half points
from Laura Cecil (Solan, OH), Pine Manor was unable to overcome the
daunting St. Joe's lead in the latter half as the Royal Blue held
on to earn a conference victory, 70-47.
Carolyn Freeman scored 12 points, made 4 of 6 trey
attempts and dealt 5 assists in the SJC win. Allison
Miner grabbed 9 boards in the contest and SR Megan
Farrell (Abington, MA) came off the bench to tally 8
points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Meghan Daigle
was efficient from the floor as she connected on 5 of 7 field goal
attempts and 5 of 6 free throw shots to account for her team-high
15 points. The sophomore forward also added 7 rebounds in the
contest. Erin Cartwright tallied 7 points with a
3-4 shooting effort and 4 assists. Both JR Andrea
Enright (Holyoke, MA) and FY Sarah
Fournier (Jay, ME) both scored 7 points off the bench.
For Pine Manor, Laura Cecil scored a game-high 20 points and Nicole
Doras (Salisbury, MA) grabbed 5 steals.
St. Joe's will travel to Providence, RI on Saturday, 2/9 to face
off against GNAC opponent Johnson and Wales University for a 1:00
PM tipoff.
