STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College defeated GNAC opponent
Saint Joseph (CT), 74-51, in the team's first conference game of
the season. Three SJC players turned in double-digit point totals
as JR Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) scored 13
points and FY Erin Cartwright
(Acton, MA) had 12 points. SO Carolyn
Freeman (Scarborough, ME) added 11 points and 11
boards for her third double-double of the season. The Saint Joseph
(CT) Blue Jays fall to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in GNAC play and Saint
Joseph's College improves to 8-4, 1-0 in GNAC competition.
St. Joe's got off to a good start and didn't look back as they led
the game from buzzer to buzzer. The women led 6-0 after two minutes
of play when SO Allison Miner (Pembroke, NH) hit a jumper to help
stake her team's early lead.
SR Marie Lint (Orono, ME) made
back-to-back shots to put SJC up 24-14 with 5:43 left in the first
half. St. Joe's led, 33-23, going into halftime.
The Blue Jays would narrow the St. Joe's lead to five points at
14:44 of the second half when Allison Richards (Meriden, CT) hit a
three-pointer to make it a two-possession game for Saint Joseph
(CT).
St. Joe's mounted an 11-2 run in the next four minutes, highlighted
by an important 3-pointer from Erin
Cartwright to put her team up by ten at the 13:07
mark. The Royal Blue led the Blue Jays by at least nine points for
the remainder of the game.
Alysn Ludwig scored 10 of her
team-high 13 points in the first half and also played her usual
stellar defense. Ludwig helped hold the Blue Jays'
top scorer, Illaria Schiano (Wallingford, CT) to 10 points in the
game with her tenacious defensive play.
Point guard Erin Cartwright
ignited the St. Joe's offense in the second half with her run and
gun style of play. Besides leading the charge upcourt,
Cartwright scored 10 of her 12 points and was 2-3
from beyond the arc in the latter half.
SR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA)
scored 9 points and added 4 rebounds off the bench and SO
Meghan Daigle (Grantham, NH)
added 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Marquia Davis (Bloomfield, CT) paced the Blue Jays with 16 points
and Amanda Ciarcia (Newington, CT) added 15 points in the loss.
Saint Joseph's College next plays on Tuesday, 1/15, when they
travel to Boston, MA to take on GNAC opponent Simmons College. The
game begins at 6:00 PM.
