The SJC women's basketball team recently celebrated their
inaugural season in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with an
awards dinner at Rose's Restaurant in Windham. The Monks posted a
15-10 record, qualified for conference playoffs and had several
players recognized by the GNAC. The awards were voted upon by the
players and were announced by Coach Deb Reardon at the end of the
evening.
SO Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough,
ME/Catherine McAuley HS) received 2007-08 Most Valuable Player
honors after leading the team in nearly every statistical category,
including scoring (12.4 PPG), rebounding (6.5 RPG), assists (2.7
APG) and blocked shots (0.5 BPG). Her 60 three-point field goals
made during the season not only led the team, but also placed
Freeman in the SJC women's basketball record books behind Kristen
Chavarie (68 made in 1996-97) and tied with Neile Joler (1984-85)
for the second-most three-pointers made in a single season. Freeman
was named to the GNAC All-Conference First Team after the
conclusion of the season, was listed on the GNAC weekly honor roll
four times and was named as the Women's Basketball Coaches
Association Player of the Week on January 21st.
JR Tri-Captain Aly Ludwig
(Waldoboro, ME/Medomak Valley HS) earned the 2007-08 Best Defender
Award and once again handled all the difficult defensive
assignments this season. Ludwig's 53 steals led the Royal Blue and
her 4.8 rebounds per game ranked third on the team. She grabbed
three or more steals in 12 of 23 games in which she played and also
averaged 7.0 points and 2.4 assists per contest. Ludwig was named
category leader in steals by the Maine Women's Basketball
Association.
FY Sarah Fournier (Jay, ME/ Mt.
Blue HS) was honored with the Most Team Spirit Award. Known for her
positive outlook and contagious enthusiasm, Fournier kept the team
pumped all season. Fournier gave her teammates something to cheer
about as she went 4 for 6 from behind the arc for a career high 12
points against Norwich in February.
FY Kayla Boston (N. Berwick,
ME/Noble HS) received the Most Improved Award. Finding a niche on a
guard-heavy squad was a challenge for this newcomer, but she set
herself apart with speed and aggressive defense. Boston's hard work
paid off as she worked her way into the rotation during the second
half of the season.
