STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Women's Basketball
team hosted in-state rival Thomas College on Wednesday evening and
was edged by a five point margin, 64-59. SO Allison
Miner (Pembroke, NH) had her best game of the season with
9 rebounds and a season-high 15 points. The Terriers were led by JR
Amy Miles (Waldo, ME) and FY Cortney Barrett (Monmouth, ME) with 17
point apiece.
St. Joe's drops to 4-3 on the young season and Thomas College
improves to 3-2 with the victory.
St. Joe's fell behind 15-8 with nine minutes remaining in the first
half after forward Cortney Barrett hit jumpers on consecutive
Terrier possessions. The five minutes that followed was all St.
Joe's, as they went on a 14-3 run to take the lead 22-18 with 3:39
left in the half. FY Erin Cartwright (Acton, MA)
sparked the run, grabbing 2 steals and a rebound on defense.
Cartwright also dealt 2 assists and hit a jumpshot in the SJC run.
SR Marie Lint (Orono, ME) provided some offensive
punch off the bench, as she nailed two jump shots during the five
minute span.
Saint Joseph's College led the Terriers of Thomas College, 29-28,
going into halftime.
The St. Joe's women extended their lead to six points when
Marie Lint hit a jump shot to put her team ahead,
42-36, four minutes into the second half. The Terriers turned up
the heat on SJC and went on a 16-4 run to take the lead, 52-46,
with eight minutes left in the game. The Terriers "D" grabbed four
steals and FY Cortney Barrett scored 6 points off two jumpshots and
2 free throws to help stake her team's advantage.
Erin Cartwright and Allison Miner
led the way as St. Joe's rattled off eight unanswered points to
regain the lead, 54-52, with 5:44 remaining. Thomas fought back to
take the lead, 64-55, with a 12-1 offensive outburst highlighted by
the Terriers making 6 of 8 free throw attempts. St. Joe's ran out
of time on their comeback bid, losing by a final score of
64-59.
St. Joe's Erin Cartwright displayed a solid effort
in the loss and scored 9 points while grabbing 8 boards and 3
steals. Marie Lint played well off the bench and
scored 8 points and SO Carolyn Freeman
(Scarborough, ME) racked up 10 rebounds in the game for Saint
Joseph's College.
Terrier's guard Mallorie Blakney scored 13 points with 6 rebounds
and 5 steals in the Thomas victory.
St. Joe's will host Maine-Maritime on Sunday, 12/9 @ 2:00 PM.
