Geel (St. George, ME) scored a season-high 15
points and Carolyn Freeman
‘10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) netted 12 points to help Saint
Josephs' College (4-1) defeat the University of Maine at Machias
(1-4), 83-42, on Sunday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center.
Clippers forward Briann Emery ‘12 (Madison, ME) led all
scorers with 17 points in the losing effort.
St. Joe's jumped out to an early 12-0 advantage in the opening four
minutes with five points from Freeman and four from
Alysn Ludwig ‘09
(Waldoboro, ME). Freeman extended the SJC lead to 15-4 two minutes
later with her second of four three-pointers in the first half.
Freeman's success from beyond the arc proved
infectious for the Lady Monks, who shot 66.7% *8-12) from long
distance in the opening stanza and made nine of nineteen attempts
overall in the game. Geel connected for her first
collegiate three-pointer with 10 minutes to play in the first half
to give the Royal Blue a 20-12 lead. St. Joe's converted four
treys, two from Megan McDevitt
‘12 (Cumberland, ME) and one each from Sarah
Fournier ‘11 (Jay, ME) and
Freeman, in the final five minutes of the half to
secure a 26 point lead going into intermission.
The Clippers lessened the SJC lead to 23 points after Emery made a
free throw three minutes into the second half, but the Lady Monks
would not allow the visitors to climb back into the contest and led
by 25 or more for the remainder of the game.
Allison Miner '10 (Pembroke, NH),
Ludwig and McDevitt all netted
eight points in the win and Dana
Clark ‘12 (South Thomaston, ME) chipped in
with seven points. In all, thirteen different SJC players scored in
the win. Freeman and Geel tied
for the team lead with six boards apiece and Erin
Cartwright ‘11 (Acton, MA) paced the home
team with six assists. Casey
Drake ‘11 (Lebanon, NH) and
Cartwright both grabbed three steals.
For the Clippers, Talaya Woodall tallied nine points, nine steals
and five rebounds and Kayla Wood ‘12 (East Machias, ME) added
five points in the loss.
St. Joe's outrebounded the Clippers 52-20 and grabbed 22 offensive
boards in the win. The Royal Blue shot 49.2% (32-65) from the field
while the visitors connected on 26.7% (12-45) of their field goal
attempts.
Saint Joseph's will travel to Biddeford, ME on Wednesday, December
3rd to take on the University of New England at 5:30 PM.
