Monks Overwhelm Fighting Scots, 72-42

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (2-2), buoyed by a 7-9 performance from beyond the arc in the first half, defeated Gordon College (2-2), 72-42, in non-conference women's basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening. Four Monks reached double-digit point totals, with Carolyn Freeman '10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) and Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland, ME) both notching a game-high 15 points in the lopsided victory.

Allie Parent (Camden, ME), a sophomore transfer from Rivier College, posted her best effort yet at St. Joe's, with 11 points, 9 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals. Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) recorded her second double-double effort of the young season with 10 points and 12 caroms and also batted away three Gordon shots in the triumph.

Rebecca Carroll '10 (Pleasant Valley, NY) led the Fighting Scots with 11 points and added 6 rebounds and Kayla Pacheco '13 (Sutton, MA) netted 9 points and 6 boards in a losing effort. Emily Armstrong '13 (Swansea, MA) added a team-high 8 caroms.

St. Joe's jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first five minutes, as Parent knocked down a trey and McDevitt, who was 3-4 from beyond the arc in the first half, drained a pair from downtown to set the tone early for the Monks. Freshman guard Danyelle Shufelt (Sutton, VT) joined in the action with two three-pointers in the opening stanza as the hosts held a decided 40-20 lead heading into intermission.

Although the lights-out shooting from three-point distance failed to continue in the second half - St. Joe's shot just 1-7 in the closing period, the Monks maintained the lofty cushion for the duration and capped the game with their highest lead of the night.

Shufelt netted 8 points and Casey Drake '11 (Lebanon, NH) added 6 points and 5 dimes for the Monks. McDevitt played a complete game, with 6 caroms and 4 assists aside from her 15 points in the win.

St. Joe's will host University of Southern Maine on Sunday at 5:30, while Gordon is set to play at Framingham State on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
