Thoroughbreds Race Past Monks, 60-49

BRUNSWICK, ME - Skidmore College (7-1) defeated Saint Joseph's (6-5), 60-49, on Sunday in the Coastal Maine Classic hosted by Bowdoin College. Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) paced the Monks with 15 points and 6 boards and Meghan Daigle '10 (Grantham, NH) added 13 points and 5 caroms in the losing bid.

Carolyn Freeman '10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau when she made a jumpshot with 23 seconds remaining in the game. Freeman, who entered the contest needing 8 points to reach the milestone, tallied 9 points and 3 rebounds against the Thoroughbreds. Freeman joins her mom, Linda (Johnson) Freeman '81, who was the first SJC women's basketball player to reach the landmark and ranks fourth in team history with 1,560 points, on the Monks' 1,000-point banner.

Sharlyn Harper and Meghan Gaugler, who connected on four of six three-point shots and grabbed four steals, both netted 16 points for Skidmore. Harper and Daigle both earned All-Classic Team honors.

The Thoroughbreds took the lead four minutes into the game and did not trail for the remainder of the contest. Skidmore carried a 32-26 advantage into the break, thanks in part to a trio of three-pointers from Gaugler. The Monks were able to cut the deficit to a single point on two occasions early in the second stanza, but the final effort was negated by an 8-0 run by the Thoroughbreds, who received three-pointers from Harper and Gaugler during the stretch and led 42-33 with 13:11 remaining.

St. Joe's managed to maintain a two-possession deficit for the subsequent 10 minutes, but Skidmore pulled away and built a double-digit cushion in the closing minutes.

St. Joe's shot 41.9% (18-43) from the field, 25% (3-12) from beyond the arc, and 83.3% (10-12) from the FT line, while Skidmore shot 43.1% (22-51) from the floor, 50% (8-16) from three-point range and 80% (8-10) from the charity stripe. The Monks held a 30-26 advantage on the glass, but committed 24 turnovers, with 13 coming off Skidmore steals.

The Monks will kick off the conference portion of their schedule with a game at GNAC defending champion Emmanuel College (8-1) on Thursday, January 7th at 7:00 PM. Skidmore will host Williams College on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
