Monks Fall Short, 60-59

PROVIDENCE, RI - Johnson & Wales (6-9, 1-1 GNAC) edged out Saint Joseph's (7-8, 1-2 GNAC), 60-59, in a GNAC Women's Basketball game on Monday evening. Meghan Daigle '10 (Grantham, NH) led all scorers with 18 points and was 7-11 from the floor in the losing effort.

Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) netted her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards and Danyelle Shufelt '13 (Sutton, VT) added 9 points for the Monks. Allie Parent '12 (Camden, ME) grabbed 10 rebounds and Carolyn Freeman '10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) chipped in with 8 points in the loss.

The game was closely contested throughout, as neither team secured a lead of greater than 8 points and the GNAC rivals swapped leads on six occasions. St. Joe's tied the game three times, with two such occurrences coming in the final three minutes of the game.

The Monks trailed by six, 55-49, with 4:39 remaining, but a layup by Geel, two freebies from Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland, ME) and a fastbreak layup by Casey Drake '11 (Lebanon, NH) knotted the game at 55-apiece with 2:20 to go.

The Wildcats received buckets from Allyson Dowen and Morgan Wilson over the next 1:40, but Daigle neutralized the lead with a pair of baskets and the game stood at a 59-59 stalemate with 28 seconds on the game clock. With four seconds left, Daigle fouled Marina Millian, who missed the first attempt but drained the second to provide her team with a slim 60-59 conference win.

St. Joe's shot 38.5% (20-52) overall, 8.3% (1-12) from three-point range, and 78.3% (18-23) from the line, while Johnson & Wales shot 40% (22-55) from the field, 41.7% (5-12) from beyond the arc and 52.4% (11-21) from the charity stripe. St. Joe's held a 45-28 advantage on the glass, but committed 23 turnovers with JWU grabbing 17 steals in the contest.
