Monks Roll Over Terriers, 68-49

WATERVILLE, ME – Juniors Megan McDevitt (Cumberland, ME) and Allie Parent (Camden, ME) both scored 13 points for Saint Joseph's (3-3) in a 68-49 victory over Thomas College (1-3) in a non-league women's basketball game on Wednesday night.

St. Joe's never trailed and shot a season-high 48.3% (28-58) from the floor in the lopsided triumph. Leading 8-6 after three minutes of play, the Monks received six points from freshman forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, ME) as part of a 21-8 run to secure a 29-14 advantage with 11 minutes to go in the first half.

Saint Joseph's went on to maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game and led 43-31 going into halftime. The Terriers managed to score just 18 points in the second half while shooting just 16.1% (5-31) overall and 8.3% (1-12) from three-point range over the final 20 minutes.

For the Monks, Young scored 10 points with five rebounds and fellow freshman Mackenzie Young (Augusta, ME) tallied eight points, nine assists and five steals. Casey Drake '11 (Lebanon, NH) chipped in with eight points and Lindsay Moore '14 (Somersworth, NH) scored six points in the one-sided win.

Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) added four points, six caroms and four blocked shots for Saint Joseph's.

Karin Bird '12 (Lee, ME) scored 13 points to lead the hosts and Ashley Allen '11 (Robbinston, ME) added 10 points in the losing effort.

St. Joe's shot 48.3% (28-58) overall, 35.3% (6-17) from beyond the arc and 60% (6-10) at the charity stripe in the victory. Thomas countered by shooting 25.5% (14-55) from the floor, 10% (2-20) from three-point range and 82.6% (19-23) from the FT line. The Monks out-rebounded the Terriers 39-32 and received 22 points from the bench.

With the win, Saint Joseph's has now won four straight against Thomas and improves to 53-5 (.914) in the history of the matchup.  

The Monks will attempt to notch consecutive wins for the first time this season when they play host to Maine Maritime on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the 2010-11 home-opener. Thomas will take on Saint Joseph's (NY) at home on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
