Owls Top Monks in Regis Invitational Consolation, 77-54

WESTON, MA – Saint Joseph's (4-3) fell to Westfield State (3-4), 77-54), in the consolation game of the Regis College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Nicolette Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine/Portland) paced the Monks with 12 points in the losing effort.

The Owls received a solid performance in the first half by Jen Ashton, who led the team in points with 21 on the game. The Owls offense found a groove and continued to excel in the opening stanza with the help of some excellent three-point shooting by Courtney Kegresse, who netted 13 points on the afternoon.

St. Joe's trailed by nine, 36-27, heading into the break after sophomore forward Lindsay Moore (Somersworth, N.H.) scored a layup with 31 seconds left in the opening frame.

The Monks trailed 38-31 three minutes into the second half, but the Owls proceeded to post a game-changing 14-3 run from which the Royal Blue would not recover.

For St. Joe's, Moore tallied 10 points and six rebounds, Allie Parent '12 (Camden, Maine) recorded nine points, and Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland, Maine) chipped in with eight points. Junior guard Danyelle Shufelt (Sutton, Vt.) grabbed four steals in the loss.

Saint Joseph's had never faced Westfield State in a women's basketball contest prior to this afternoon. 

The Owls will play their next game against Eastern Connecticut State Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. The Monks will host Bridgewater State Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
