Monks Spurn Hornets, 58-44

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (6-5) jumped out to a commanding lead in the first half and rode the momentum to collect a 58-44 victory over Lyndon State College (3-5) in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday evening. Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) tallied 14 points, 14 rebounds and five steals in the triumph.

The Monks entered today's action having lost four straight but left little doubt in the early going that the losing streak would end, as the Royal Blue scored the game's first 14 points and held a 24-2 cushion after Moore made a layup off a Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) feed with 8:22 remaining in the first half.

Trailing 28-4 two minutes later, the visiting Hornets rallied with a 15-5 run to cut the SJC lead to 33-19 heading into intermission.

As it played out, the Monks went on to lead by at least 14 points for the remainder of the contest.

For the Monks, Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) registered 14 points, 10 caroms and three blocked shots, Danyelle Shufelt (Sutton, Vt.) was 6-6 from the FT line and netted 12 points, and Alyssa Grigware (Biddeford, Maine) contributed six points and five boards.

For the Hornets, Donna Lawson (Irasburg, Vt.) put up 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a pair of rejections and Chelsea Watson (Eliot, Maine) added eight points and nine boards in a losing effort.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 22-1 in the history of the series with Lyndon State College.
