STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, Maine) is on the list of 22 players who have been chosen to participate in the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Classic. The exhibition, played annually to showcase the top NCAA DIII players in the region, will take place on March 29 at Ainsworth Gym on the campus of Smith College. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 PM.
Young enjoyed her finest collegiate campaign as a senior, posting career-highs in scoring (15.2 PPG), rebounding (7.8 RPG), field goals made (166), three-pointers made (18), free throws made (90), free throw percentage (79.6%), assists (41) and total points (440). For her efforts, Young claimed All-Conference honors for the first time as a Second Team honoree.
She also earned Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player accolades after averaging 20.3 points and 12.3 rebounds in three GNAC Tournament victories, helping Saint Joseph's earn its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) crown in seven years as a member of the league.
The senior post player also became the 21st member of the Monks' 1,000-Point Club during the 2013-14 campaign. Starting the season 361 points shy of the mark, Young proved up to the challenge and hit the four-digit total with 18 points in the regular-season finale versus Lasell College on February 22nd.
In 105 career games, Young netted 1,079 points with 563 rebounds, 104 blocks, 100 assists and 70 steals.
Young will be the third Saint Joseph's player to participate in the NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic, joining fellow 1,000-point scorers Ashley Geel '12 and Carolyn Freeman '10. She is one of two representatives from the GNAC - University of Saint Joseph (CT) senior guard Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) being the other – to be selected. Young is also one of two players from the State of Maine to be chosen, as Bowdoin College senior guard Kirsten Prue (Auburn, Maine) will also play in the exhibition contest later this month.
