STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly accolades have been announced and Saint Joseph's College senior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) has been selected as the GNAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Benway has also earned Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Player of the Week honors and is listed on the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) weekly honor roll.
Benway averaged 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting 60.9% (14-23 FG) from the floor in two GNAC wins last week. In a rematch of the 2018 GNAC Championship game against Suffolk on Saturday, she shot 9-of-10 for 20 points to go with nine boards and two blocks in a key victory for the Monks. The senior forward also double-doubled with 12 points and 15 rebounds in a victory at Simmons on Thursday night.
Through 19 games for the undefeated Monks, Benway is averaging 13.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest while shooting 55.6% (109-196) from the floor and 62.5% (35-56) from the free-throw line. She has posted six double-doubles so far this winter and ranks second in the conference in offensive rebounds (86), third in field goal percentage, fourth in total rebounds (187), and sixth in rebounding average.
In nearly four full seasons, Benway has scored 1,175 points with 768 rebounds and is one of just six players in program history to have surpassed the 1,000-point and 750-rebound plateaus. She is currently third in team history in career field goal percentage (52.7%) and ranks among the Monks' all-time leaders in total rebounds (768, 7th), rebounding average (7.5, 8th), field goals made (503, 10th), and points (1,175, 16th).
For Benway, the GNAC Player of the Week award is the second of her career and first since December 12th, 2016.
Saint Joseph's (19-0, 7-0 GNAC) will play at Rivier University on Thursday at 7:00 PM.
