STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball postseason honors have been announced and a pair of Saint Joseph's College players have earned accolades.
Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) has been named as a 2020 Second Team All-GNAC selection while sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) has earned Third Team All-Conference honors.
Stapelfeld claims Second Team accolades after averaging 11.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 39.2% (112-286) from the field, 34.7% (51-147) from three-point distance, and 87.3% (48-55) from the free-throw line during her junior season. She tied for second in the conference in three-pointers made and finished the year ranked third in three-point percentage. Stapelfeld paced the Monks in scoring average during her first winter in Standish.
Stapelfeld, who transferred to Saint Joseph's from Simmons University last summer, scored her 1,000th career point in a 70-62 victory at Albertus Magnus College on January 25th and capped her third college season having scored 1,118 points in 78 career contests. The All-Conference honor is the second of her career – she earned First Team All-GNAC accolades after netting 21.8 PPG for Simmons, which unexpectedly ceased sponsorship of women's basketball following the 2019 campaign.
Fillion collects her first All-Conference honor after netting 11.4 points per game while pulling down 4.4 caroms per contest. The sophomore guard tied for second in the GNAC with Stapelfeld in three-pointers made (51) and posted the second-highest three-point shooting percentage (35.4%, 51-144) in the conference this winter.
Under the watch of 27th-year Head Coach Mike McDevitt '83, the Monks posted a 19-9 overall record with a 9-2 mark in GNAC play en route to earning the #2 seed in the conference tournament. St. Joe's slipped past #7 Johnson & Wales in GNAC quarterfinal play and #3 Regis in the semifinal round to advance to the GNAC Championship game for the fifth-consecutive year. Although the Monks fell to top-seeded Emmanuel in the title contest on February 29th, the season was a remarkable success considering the program lost to graduation nearly 80% of its offensive production from a 2018-19 team that went 28-2 and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA DIII Tournament.
