Saint Joseph’s Surges Past Colby, 81-63

WATERVILLE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-0) defeated Colby College (2-1), 81-63, in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The teams swapped the lead nine times and played to four tie scores in the first two quarters, but the Monks claimed the advantage for good with the help of a 13-4 run that saw St. Joe's carry a 39-33 lead into intermission.

In the third quarter, Saint Joseph's picked up where they left off with six unanswered points over the first four minutes of the penultimate period and held a 45-33 cushion after junior guard Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) hit a pair of free throws at the 6:36 mark.

The Mules cut their deficit down to eight points (52-44) after junior guard Alisha Aube (Westbrook, Maine) drilled a three-pointer with 1:37 left in the third quarter, but the Monks headed into the final frame with a 59-46 lead on the heels of a 7-2 burst in the closing 74 seconds.

Saint Joseph's proceeded to hold a double-digit lead for the better part of the fourth quarter and grabbed a game-high 21-point advantage (81-60) when freshman Hannah Talon (Windham, Maine) hit a layup with four seconds remaining.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks shot 47.0% (31-66) from the field, including a 44.4% (8-18) clip from three-point range, while the Mules converted 41.3% (26-63) of their shots with a 20.0% (4-20) effort from downtown…St. Joe's committed just nine turnovers in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) netted 16 points with four assists and was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc
  • Senior forward Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) scored 11 points with eight rebounds and three assists
  • Junior guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) added 11 points and a pair of boards
  • Junior forward Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) produced eight points, six caroms, and two assists
  • Freshman guard Angelica Hurley (Groverland, Mass.) chipped in with eight points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds
  • Philippon added eight points after going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and at the FT line

LEADERS – COLBY:

  • Aube led all players with 17 points and pulled down five rebounds
  • Freshman guard Carter McGloon (Bethesda, Md.) came off the bench to score 11 points
  • Freshman guard Caroline Smith (Freeport, Maine) chipped in with eight points, four boards, and three assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's improves to 16-14 all-time versus Colby College and has now defeated the Mules in six-consecutive meetings, the Monks' longest winning streak in the history of the series.
