Saint Joseph’s Handles Colby-Sawyer, 86-41

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (19-4, 13-2 GNAC) breezed past Colby-Sawyer College (2-17, 2-11 GNAC), 86-41, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held the lead for all but the opening minutes, as the Chargers' only advantage of the evening came on their first possession of the night when junior guard Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) hit a three-pointer to make it a 3-2 game 24 seconds in.

Saint Joseph's took control from this point forward, as the hosts capped the first quarter on a 23-5 run and kicked off the second stanza with a commanding 25-8 cushion. Six different SJC players scored in the first quarter with sophomore guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) leading the effort by netting eight in just three minutes off the bench.

The Monks continued to dominate in the second frame and attained a 38-12 lead after sophomore guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) hit a jumper with 4:36 before the break.

After senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) converted a three-point play with a freebie with six seconds on the clock, St. Joe's headed into intermission with a 30-point (50-20) advantage. The Monks shot a scorching 72.7% (8-11) from three-point distance in the first half.

St. Joe's held a 74-28 lead after the third quarter and claimed a game-high 50-point (78-28) lead when freshman Hanna Webster (Alvin, Texas) made a jump shot with 9:32 left in the fourth frame.

BEYOND THE BOX:

The Monks broke the program's single-game three-point shooting percentage record with a 59.1% (13-22) clip as six different players hit on at least one trifecta on the evening. The former record of 57.9% (11-19) was set in a win over Colby College on December 5th, 2019.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Stapelfeld led the Monks with 19 points and added six rebounds and three assists
  • Sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) netted 18 with four assists and three boards
  • Anderson added 15 points and three caroms
  • Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) grabbed 12 rebounds and added five points and three assists

LEADERS – COLBY-SAWYER:

  • Freshman guard Megan Molettierri (Pelham, N.H.) paced the Chargers with 16 points
  • Parent added eight points and two rebounds
  • Freshman guard Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) contributed with six points, three rebounds, and a pair of assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-1 in the history of the series with Colby-Sawyer College and has now defeated the Chargers in six-consecutive meetings, a trend that began during the 1983-84 campaign.

Saint Joseph's will host Lasell University in the 2021-22 regular-season finale on Saturday. The GNAC matchup is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
