Monks Surge Past Wildcats, 72-57

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Saint Joseph's College improved to 4-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 72-57 women's basketball victory at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks rallied from an 11-5 deficit midway through the first quarter with a game-altering 17-0 run that saw the visitors claim a 22-11 lead when sophomore guard Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) stemmed the surge with a jump shot 37 seconds into the second stanza.

Saint Joseph's (8-6, 4-0 GNAC) held Johnson & Wales (5-8, 1-2 GNAC) to just seven points off 3-for-19 shooting in the second quarter and maintained a comfortable 42-18 cushion going into intermission.

St. Joe's proceeded to lead by at least 20 points – including a game-high 28-point (54-26) advantage with 1:43 left in the third – until the Wildcats registered a 17-5 outburst late in the fourth quarter, but JWU was unable to cut the SJC lead to less than 15 points down the stretch.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Saint Joseph's committed only six turnovers and netted 21 points off 19 Johnson & Wales miscues…The Monks also held the lead in points in the paint (44-24) and bench points (21-12) in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Stapelfeld was 8-for-11 from the floor with 19 points and five rebounds
  • Sophomore forward Grace Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) tallied 19 points, five rebounds, and three steals
  • Senior guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) contributed eight points, seven assists, four boards, and three steals
  • Freshman guard Maddie Russell came off the bench to score 13 points with three assists and a pair of rebounds
  • Senior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) chipped in with five points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals

LEADERS – JOHNSON & WALES:

  • Alexa Lora scored a game-high 21 points with eight rebounds and three assists
  • Mikayla Caruso added 10 points, six boards, and a pair of steals
  • Sarah Wisniewski chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 18-6 all-time versus Johnson & Wales University and has now defeated the Wildcats in 12 consecutive meetings dating back to the 2015-16 campaign.
