Swim Program Makes History on Opening Day

STANDISH, ME – The Saint Joseph's College swim program made history when the men's and women's teams defeated Husson University in the opening meet of the 2013-14 season at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.

The women edged the Eagles by a 131-121 score and the men cruised to a 139-50 triumph in the opening event of the year, marking the first sweep in the seven-year history of the Saint Joseph's swim program.

On the men's side, sophomore Alex Gilvey (Windham, Maine) won a pair of individual events with a 1:58.28 time in the 200-Free and a 57.44 effort in the 100-Back and also swam the 100-IM in 1:00.26. Freshman Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.) broke a pair of program records with victories in the 100-Fly (57.04) and 50-Free (25.68) and also won the 100-Breast (1:07.57) in his first NCAA meet.

Junior Chris Cullity (North Reading, Mass.) notched victories in the 1000-Free (11:35.41) and 500-Free (5:40.14) races while junior Preston Bowden (Biddeford, Maine) and senior Thomas Smith (New Hartford, Conn.) also recorded top finishes in the 2013 opener.

Freshman Ian Riddell (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also performed well in his first collegiate action, recording runner-up efforts in the 50-Free (24.70) and 100-Free (59.37) competitions.

For the women, sophomore Anne Fougere (Warner, N.H.) helped lead the Royal Blue to a narrow victory with wins in the 50-Breast (37.43) and 100-Breast (1:22.68) and first-year Danielle Charette (Westfield, Mass.) added top finishes in the 200-Free (2:15.19) and 500-Free (5:59.23) events.

Freshman Lauren Halvorsen (South Portland, Maine) won the 1000-Free (12:51.58) and posted a runner-up time in the 500-Free (6:17.08) while sophomore Allie Krasco (Melrose, Mass.) was the top finisher in the 100-IM (1:14.12) and placed second in the 50-Back (34.73) and 100-Back (1:13.28) competitions.

Lauren Prue (Glenburn, Maine) notched runner-up performances in the 1000-Free (13:49.98) and 100-Fly (1:17.18) and 100-IM (1:15.81) and fellow freshman Brittany Dalphonse (Coventry, R.I.) finished second in the 50-Breast (44.24) event.

Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday when both teams swim at Elms College.
