Saint Joseph’s Triumphant in NAC Quarterfinal, 3-1

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College (13-4, 5-1 NAC) defeated Thomas College (3-13, 1-5) by a 3-1 score in a North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Quarterfinal on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Kelly Emerson (Vassalboro, ME) netted the game-winning goal in the 48th minute to help lift the Lady Monks to the team's first NAC postseason victory. The Terriers' season comes to a close with the playoff loss.

With the victory, #3 Saint Joseph's advances to the semifinal round and will play on Saturday, November 1st at 2:00 PM on the road against #2 seed University of Maine at Farmington.

Julia Ostrowski ‘10 (Albany, NY) opened the game scoring in the 27th minute when she tallied her 15th goal of the season on a perfectly executed penalty corner. Jillian Kimball ‘10 (Albany Township, ME), who notched three assists in the playoff win, recorded a helper on the play.

Thomas answered the SJC goal just four minutes later, when Ali Kriegel ‘12 (Winslow, ME) found the top of the net past Lady Monks keeper Meaghan Johnson ‘12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) on a corner to tie the contest, 1-1. Amy Miles ‘09 (Waldo, ME) was credited with an assist on the score.

The deadlocked match stood until the 48th minute when Emerson scored the go-ahead goal. The senior forward took a pass from Kimball, at close range, and suffed the ball into the left side of the net past Terriers keeper Megan Denby ‘10 (Copiague, NY) to provide the Royal Blue with a one-goal advantage.

Freshman Sarah Bartell (Exeter, NH), who seemed to spark the SJC offense as a substitute in the second half, provided the Lady Monks with an insurance goal at the 59:19 mark. Kimball and Alyssa Dunn ‘11 (Standish, ME) recorded assists on the tally that capped the game scoring with Saint Joseph's on top, 3-1.

Denby made 13 saves for the Terriers while Johnson made seven stops for the Lady Monks.

St. Joe's held a 22-10 advantage in shots and a 14-9 edge in penalty corners in the quarterfinal matchup.

The SJC field hockey team had not won a conference postseason contest since the club defeated Husson College, 3-0, in a Maine Athletic Conference Quarterfinal game on October 26th, 2000.
