SJC Earns First Conference Victory

WATERVILLE, ME - Saint Joseph's College (4-1, 1-0 NAC) defeated host-team Thomas College (1-4, 0-1 NAC) on Saturday, 2-1, to post the program's first North Atlantic Conference victory. Kelly Emerson '09 (Vassalboro, ME) and Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) both notched goals and Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME) and Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) each tallied assists in the victory. The SJC field hockey team has carried NCAA D III Independent status since the 2002 season and is currently participating in the program's first season in the NAC.

The Lady Monks opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Nowell connected on a pass from Kimball to notch her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

St. Joe's held the one-goal advantage until Terriers midfielder Kellie Martel put the ball past SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME) at the 39:48 mark to tie the contest, 1-1.

Saint Joseph's scored the go-ahead marker just five minutes later when Emerson placed a shot past Terriers goalkeeper Megan Denby, her third goal of the season, on a pass from Dunn.

The Lady Monks held a 15-3 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in penalty corners in the victory. Nowell steered six shots on net and Kimball posted four shots on goal for the Royal Blue.

Thomas goalkeeper Megan Denby recorded 11 saves in the losing effort.

Saint Joseph's will travel to Boston, MA on Wednesday, September 24th to face off against Wheelock College at 7:00 PM. The Terriers will play at Maine-Farmington on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
