SCHENECTADY, NY - Union College (6-7) defeated Saint Joseph's (11-3, 5-0 NAC), 3-0, on in a non-league field hockey match on Sunday afternoon. Monks keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) made 10 saves in the losing effort.
Natalie Engel (Johnstown, NY) had a goal and an assist and Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) dished out two assists for Union in the win. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for St. Joe's, while the Dutchwomen halted a four game losing streak with the result.
Union had a 22-6 shot advantage and goalkeeper Sarah Rios
(Queensbury, NY) recorded her fourth shutout of the season with
three saves.
Engel opened the scoring with an assist from Powers just 1:52 into
the contest, and it was the sophomore's first goal of the season.
Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA) notched her fourth of the year fewer
than three minutes later for a 2-0 Union lead. The senior got a
pass from Engel and took a high shot inside the left post at
4:49. It remained a two goal game at the half.
Isabel Zellweger (Rye, NY) closed out the scoring with her fourth
of the year at 34:44, when she took a pass from Powers and tipped
in the tally.
Union had an 11-2 advantage in corners. This was the first meeting
between the two schools in field hockey.
St. Joe's will play at Endicott on October 21st at 6:00
PM before closing out the regular season with two weekend
conference contests on the road against Simmons (Saturday, 1:00 PM)
and Lasell (Sunday 3:00 PM). Union will host Williams on Wednesday
at 6:00 PM.
