Field Hockey Kicks Off 2009 Campaign with 13-0 Triumph

LONGMEADOW, MA - Saint Joseph's (1-0) defeated Bay Path College (0-2), 13-0, in the Monks' season opener on Monday afternoon. Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME), Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) and Courtney Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) scored three goals apiece in the lopsided contest.

The Monks wasted little time establishing a lead, as Nowell and Ostrowski both scored in the first five minutes of the non-conference contest. Nowell and Ostrowski, both All-NAC players last fall, accounted for six of the Monks' nine goals in the first half.

In all, nine different SJC players scored goals and 12 players tallied at least one point overall. Nowell added three helpers to account for nine total points and freshman Stephanie Lombardo (Steep Falls, ME) scored and chipped in with three helpers in her first collegiate action.

Also scoring for the Royal Blue were Sarah Bartell '12 (Exeter, NH), Olivia Tourangeau '12 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) and Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME). Jaimee Brett '10 (Otisfield, ME), Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) and Jordan Dumont '13 (Shapleigh, ME) all recorded an assist for St. Joe's.

Goalkeepers Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) and Rachel Varjian '13 (Sandwich, MA) split time in net for the Monks, but neither faced a shot as St. Joe's outshot the Wildcats 22-0. The 13 goals scored is a new single-game record for Saint Joseph's.

St. Joe's will play at Farleigh-Dickinson (NJ) on Saturday at 5:00 PM while Bay Path is set to host NECC rival Daniel Webster College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
