Monks Erase Two-Goal Deficit, Defeat Husson in Double-OT

STANDISH, ME - Elizabeth Andersen '13 (Cumberland, ME) tallied her first collegiate goal in dramatic fashion as she netted the game-winner 6:36 into the second overtime period to lift the Monks (5-1, 2-0 NAC) past conference rival Husson University (1-2, 1-1), 3-2, in double-overtime on Saturday afternoon. St. Joe's trailed 2-0 after 45 minutes of play, but Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) scored a pair of goals to knot the match and later set up Andersen's game-clincher.

Jillian Morin '11 (Manchester, ME) put the Eagles on the board with an unassisted tally in the 34th minute and extended the visitor's lead to 2-0 with a goal off a corner 10 minutes into the second half. Kara Poirier '13 (Berlin, NH) and Courtney Allen '11 (Gardiner, ME) both recorded an assist on the play.

Ostrowski made it a one-goal game with an unassisted score at the 53:17 mark and tied the game with 3:06 remaining in regulation with her 6th goal of the season. Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) recorded an assist on the game-tying goal.

With the 2-2 tie the teams entered extended play, which features 7-on-7 play for two 15 minutes periods, if necessary, with "Sudden Victory" rules. If the game remained tied after two OT frames, the game would be decided on penalty strokes.

Andersen made sure the game didn't extend quite that far with the help of a perfect lead pass from Ostrowski. The senior forward sprung Andersen on a breakaway with a pass up the middle of the field and the first-year midfielder beat Husson keeper Kristen Capen '13 (Leeds, ME) with a ball to the right corner of the net to end the game.

St. Joe's held a commanding lead in shots (15-6) and shots on goal (9-4), but Husson held an 11-8 edge in penalty corners in the losing effort.

SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) made two saves in net, while her counterpart, Capen, made six saves for the Eagles.

Saint Josephs' will host Wheelock College in a non-conference match-up on Thursday, October 1st at 4:00 PM while Husson is set to play at Bowdoin on Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00 PM.
