Monks Edge Out Nor’easters, 3-2

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (3-0) defeated University of New England (3-1), 3-2, in a battle of previously undefeated teams on Tuesday afternoon at Lakeside Field. Courtney Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) scored a pair of goals in the victory, which was the first over UNE in the history of the SJC field hockey program.

The Monks led 2-0 after Rague netted her second marker of the game in the 37th minute, but the Nor'easters, unbeaten with wins over Southern Maine, Castleton and Anna Maria heading into today's action, weren't about to go down easily.

Michelle Oswald '12 (Jay, ME) put the visitors on the board when the sophomore forward took a pass from Michaela Franey '11 (York, ME) and beat SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) in the 52nd minute, making it a 2-1 game.

St. Joe's received an insurance score, which proved to be necessary, from Jaimee Brett '10 (Otisfield, ME) in the 65th minute to provide the Royal Blue with a two-goal cushion. Brett's first goal of the season came after a scrum in front of UNE keeper Ayla Nelson '11 (Auburn, MA).

The Nor'easters went on to add a late goal by Taryn Flagg '10 (Livermore Falls, ME), assisted by Cassandra Bushey '11 (North Hartland, VT). But the 70th minute tally proved to be too late, as Saint Joseph's, 0-5 versus UNE dating back to 2003, came out on top, 3-2.

Nelson and Johnson each made seven stops in net and both teams recorded 11 penalty corner attempts. Saint Joseph's outshot University of New England, 14-13.

St. Joe's will host conference foe Thomas College on Saturday at 2:00 PM, while UNE will play TCCC rival Salve Regina on the road on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
