Monks Deny Beavers, Post Fifth-Consecutive Shutout

FARMINGTON, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (8-5, 3-1 GNAC) defeated University of Maine-Farmington (7-3, 2-1 NAC), 2-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

THE LEAD

Junior midfielder Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) played a hand in both of the Monks' goals, assisting on the first and netting the second, in the shutout triumph. Caiazzo set up the opening goal, scored by sophomore Samantha Silva (Laconia, N.H.), with a crossing pass and the junior notched her second goal of the season 12 minutes later, when she dribbled into the circle and unleashed a shot to the back of the cage.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's sophomore Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made seven stops to pick up her fourth-consecutive shutout while UMF senior Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine) registered five saves in the losing effort.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held slim advantages in shots (13-11) and penalty corners (10-9) in the victory. Both teams steered seven shots on goal in the non-conference tilt.

NOTEWORTHY

  • With the shutout, Saint Joseph's ties the program record for consecutive shutouts (5), a mark originally set in 2013
  • Baker's save percentage jumped from .689 to .731 after stopping all seven shots she faced this afternoon
  • Freshman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) posted a game-high four shots
  • For the Beavers, the loss is the team's first at home this season

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-21 in the history of the series with Maine-Farmington, a team the Monks have now defeated in four-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2013 campaign. The Monks have shut out the Beavers on six occasions.

Both teams face off against conference foes this Saturday, when Saint Joseph's hosts Mount Ida College in an 11:00 AM start and Maine-Farmington travels to Thomas College in a contest that also begins at 11:00 AM.
