Monks Get Defensive in 91-41 Win over Thomas

Standish, ME - GR Chad Pulkkinen (Windham, ME) scored 17 points and SR Marcus Alexander (Niceville, FL) added 16, but it was a stellar effort on the defensive end that led the SJC men's basketball team to a 91-41 victory over Thomas College on Saturday.

The Monks (13-5) held Thomas to just 17 first-half points, as the Terriers connected on just 7 of 36 shots (19.4%). St. Joe's exploded for 55 points in the half, highlighted by two spectacular dunks.

During the first ten minutes of play, SO Scot Vachon (Schenectady, NY) set up Alexander for an alley-oop dunk. With six minutes remaining in the half, FR Raymond Eatmon (Huntington, NY) treated the crowd to a rim-rattling one-handed dunk to put St. Joe's up 40-5.

After the break, the Terriers (4-16) came out fighting and had a brief 11-5 run over the first five minutes but SR Colby Emmons (Portland, ME) put the Monks back on track. St. Joe's went on to outscore Thomas 36-24 in the half and held them to just 25 percent from the floor.

Thomas College was led by Jim Veino with 10 points.

The Monks are at the University of New England on Thursday, Feb. 8th, for a doubleheader match-up with the women's team, tipoffs at 5:30 and 7:30 PM.
