BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team
never trailed in a 77-59 victory over in-state foe Saint Joseph's
College on Sunday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 on the
year while the Monks begin the season 0-2.
The Polar Bears opened the contest on an 11-3 spurt and extended
their lead to as many as 16 points in the opening half. Bowdoin
held a 38-27 edge at the break thanks to a 16-2 advantage in the
paint and 16 points off of Monks turnovers.
Bowdoin pushed the lead to 18 points on an Andrew Hippert
three-pointer with 18:05 to play, but Saint Joseph's made a few
bids to cut into the Bowdoin lead later in the period. A 9-2 spurt
cut the lead to just nine points on a jumper by FY Chris
Davis (New York, NY) with 11:15 remaining, but three
consecutive buckets by Bowdoin's Mark Phillips keyed a 6-1 run that
upped the lead back to 14 with eight minutes left. St. Joe's would
trim the lead to nine points twice more, but Bowdoin closed the
game with an 11-2 run over the final 4:34 to seal the victory.
Saint Joseph's was led by SO Ray Eatmon
(Huntington, NY), who scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. FY
Chris Davis added 12 points and JR point guard
Scot Vachon (Schenectady, NY) dished out 7 assists
in the losing effort.
The Monks will play host to the University of New England in the
team's home opener on Wednesday, 11/28 at 7:00 PM.
