Lasers Outshoot Monks, 82-73

STANDISH, ME - GNAC opponent Lasell College defeated Saint Joseph's College at home on Thursday evening, 82-73. The Monks were unable to hold on to a 13 point halftime lead as the Lasers made 58% (18-31) of their shots and outscored St. Joe's 51-29 in the second half. Lasell junior forward Brad Caravoulias (Dracut, MA) scored a game-high 27 points, 21 in the latter half, and sank 8 three-pointers in the contest. Junior forward Jose Guitian (Miami, FL) grabbed 20 rebounds to help secure the Lasers' victory. Monks junior forward Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) scored 24 points and grabbed four steals in the losing effort. With the win Lasell improves to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in GNAC play while the Monks fall to 6-5, 4-2 in GNAC competition.

The Monks shot 44% from the floor and were led by Murphy's 15 points, including 4 treys, in the first half. JR Scot Vachon set the pace for the Royal Blue as he scored 10 points, mostly coming on fast breaks, and added 6 rebounds in the opening half. SO Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, MA) also scored 10 points in the first. The Monks held a slim margin in boards, 24-22, going into halftime.

St. Joe's led by 17 points early in the second half before the Lasers shooters came alive. Lasell went on an 18-4 run beginning at the 18 minute mark, highlighted by 4 three-pointers from Caravoulias, to narrow the Monk lead to three points, 54-51, with 14 minutes remaining.

The Lasers would not be denied on this night and took the lead for good when Caravoulias hit another trey with seven minutes remaining to put his team up, 65-63.

For the Monks, Scot Vachon recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards and Alberto Rue scored 14 and grabbed 6 boards. FY Chris Davis (New York, NY) added 12 points in the loss.

Lasell junior guard Corey Godfrey (Cambridge, MA) scored 17 points with 7 rebounds in the game. Jose Guitian had 13 points and senior guard Dwayne Powell (Lauderdale Lakes, FL) scored 12 points and dished out 6 assists in the winning effort.

Both teams will play GNAC games this Saturday as Lasell College is set to host Rivier College and the Monks will play host to Mount Ida College at 3:00 PM.
