Monks Trounce Mount Ida Mustangs, 103-50

STANDISH, ME - Five different St. Joe's players reached double-digit point totals to help the Monks defeat GNAC foe Mount Ida College on Saturday. SO Alonso Davis (Richmond, VA) scored a career and game-high 26 points in the victory. St. Joe's is now 7-5 with a 5-2 record in GNAC games. Mount Ida falls to 6-8, 3-4 in GNAC play.

The only lead the Mustangs could muster would be 2-0 after they scored on their first possession of the game. JR Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) ignited the offense in the early going for the Monks as he scored 7 points in the first two minutes of the game.

Davis sparked the crowd when he extended the Monks' lead to 33 points after slamming home dunks on consecutive possessions with three minutes remaining in the first half.

The SJC lead was 38 points at halftime as the Royal Blue were up 56-18 at the break. Murphy led all scorers with 15 points and teammate Alonso Davis dropped 13 points in the first half.

The Monks would go on to increase their lead in the second half with impressive play from several players off the bench. JR Bobby Russo (Hartsdale, NY) and FY T.J. Tandberg (Windham, ME) each connected on three-point shots and scored 5 points and FY Tyler Kelley (Saco, ME) hit two 3-pointers in the latter half to help account for his 10 points in the game.

The Cheverus High School connection worked well in the paint this afternoon as freshmen Eric Friend and Anthony Savino, both from Portland, ME and former Cheverus Stags, grabbed a combined 18 boards in the winning effort. Friend had 11 rebounds, all on defense.

Alonso Davis shot 11-15 (73%) from the floor in his best offensive game in a Monks jersey. Elbie Murphy "tickled the twine" from three-point land on 3 of his 7 attempts and scored 17 points. Murphy also had 6 assists and 6 steals in the game. JR Mitch Ouellet (Fort Kent, ME) was perfect from the floor and the charity stripe, 4-4 and 2-2 respectively, and added 10 points in the St. Joe's victory. JR R.J. Mattison (Hamden, CT) made 2 of 3 three-point shots and scored 10 points off the bench.

St. Joe's shot 52% (39-75) from the floor and out-rebounded the Mustangs by a 47-32 margin. Mount Ida was 0-4 from the free throw line in the game and committed 28 turnovers.

Senior guard James Driscoll (Dennis, MA) scored 16 points to lead all Mount Ida scorers.

The Monks will play a GNAC contest at Emmanuel College on Monday, 1/21, at 3:00 PM.
