BANGOR, ME - Ray Eatmon '10
(Huntington, NY) scored 18 points to lead five St. Joe's players
with double-digit point totals in a 90-65 victory over Husson
University on Tuesday evening. Chris
Davis '11 (New York, NY) netted 16 points and
Chris Petzy '12 (East Kingston,
NH) added 14 points to help the Monks win their fourth straight
game and improve to 6-1 on the season. With two steals in the game,
Elbie Murphy '09 (Loudonville,
NY) surpassed Jamie Header '93 for the program
steals record with 288 grabs in three-plus seasons.
Tyler Kelley '11 (Saco, ME) and
Zach O'Brien '12 (Schenectady,
NY) both scored 13 points and Alberto
Rue '10 (Jamaica Plain, MA) shot 3-6 from long
distance to tally nine points in the victory. Scot
Vachon '09 (Schenectady, NY) had five assists and
five steals and Eatmon and
O'Brien both grabbed eight boards to lead the
Monks, who outrebounded the Eagles 44-30, on the glass.
Nick Perras '09 (Lancaster, NH) scored 12 points for Husson while
Blaine Meehan '09 (Winterport, ME) and Jay Uhrin '11 (Winterport,
ME) both recorded 11 points in the losing effort. Scott Kissinger
'09 (Islip Terrace, NY) had seven caroms to lead his team.
Husson's only lead of the contest came on their first possession
when Kissinger hit a jumper off a Brock Bradford ‘10
(Kenduskeag, ME) pass thirty seconds into the game. Zach
O'Brien netted five points and the Monks recorded a 10-2
run in the subsequent four minutes to establish a 10-4 lead. The
Eagles trailed by two, 10-8, thirty seconds later when Bradford
stole the ball from Eatmon and converted a
layup.
The two-point deficit was as close as Husson would come to
overtaking the Monks, as St. Joe's went on to shoot 53.1% (17-32),
while the Eagles shot just 28.1% (9-32), from the field in the
first half en route to posting a 43-20 halftime lead.
Three minutes into the second stanza the Monks rattled off a 15-0
run to take a establish their largest advantage, 33 points, to
effectively close the door on any hopes the home team might have of
making a comeback.
The final basket of the run, a three-pointer by Rue, was set up by
an Elbie Murphy pass after he
grabbed his record breaking 288th career steal, which came off a
mishandled ball by Husson guard Brock Bradford at the 14:06 mark of
the second period.
Murphy's 288 grabs in 87 games gives him a 3.31
steals per game average, which ranks second behind Allen
Fields ‘92, who recorded 237 steals in 70 games for
a 3.39 pilfering average. Murphy set the Monks
basketball single season records when he collected 126 steals and
posted a 4.2 steals per game average in 2007.
Murphy's steals per game average that season led
all of NCAA Men's Basketball.
Saint Joseph's shot an even 50% (33-66) from the floor, 7-15
(46.7%) from beyond the arc, and converted 17 of 24 (70.8%) from
the charity stripe in the win.
Husson countered with a 35.9% (23-64) effort from the field, just 7
of 32 from three-point land (21.9%), and connected on 12 of their
16 (75%) trips to the line in the losing effort.
The Monks will travel to Newton, MA on Saturday December 13th to
take on GNAC foe Lasell College at 2:00 PM. The Eagles will play at
Bates College on December 19th at 7:00 PM.
