PROVIDENCE, RI - GNAC counterpart Johnson and Wales
University (2-9, 1-3 GNAC) dealt Saint Joseph's (9-4, 3-3) a 75-72
loss on Tuesday night. Ray Eatmon
'10 (Huntington, NY) collected his first double-double of the year
and posted game-highs with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the losing
effort.
Sophomore Tyler Kelley (Saco, ME)
netted 13 points and posted a 3-4 effort from beyond the arc and
senior Elbie Murphy (Loudonville,
NY) scored 10 points and added four rebounds and four assists in
the setback for the Monks. Sophomore Chris
Davis (New York, NY) chipped in with nine points,
junior Alberto Rue (Jamaica
Plain, MA) scored seven and freshman Zach O'Brien
(Schenectady, NY) grabbed seven boards in the conference
setback.
Leading the way for Johnson & Wales was freshman Lamont Thomas
(Providence, RI) who scored 20 and added five rebounds and five
assists. Junior Darren Faust (Queens, NY) added 15 points, three
steals and two boards for the Wildcats. Freshman Tavarius Roberson
(Orlando, FL) and junior Justin Adams (Providence, RI) were both in
double figures with 14 and 10 respectively in the win for the
Wildcats.
After trading baskets throughout the early stages of the first
half, St. Joseph's went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead on a
three-pointer by freshman Chris
Petzy (East Kingston, NH) with 14:04 left in the
first half. The visiting Monks led by as many as eight in the first
half after a free throw by Rue made the score 20-12 with 10:07
remaining in the stanza. Johnson & Wales responded with a 19-5
run, capped by a layup by Thomas to take the 31-25 with 5:02 left
in the first half. The Wildcats then took the 37-32 lead into the
locker room at halftime.
Johnson & Wales controlled the action early in the second half
and took the 55-44 advantage on a three point basket by Thomas with
11:56 left in the contest. St. Joseph's chipped away at the lead
and made the game 64-63 after a traditional three-point play by
Murphy with 5:04 left in the contest. The Wildcats led by as many
down the stretch when Justin Adams' two free throws gave the team
the 71-65 lead with :56 left on the clock. The game would come down
to the final possession, however when Murphy made the first of two
free throws to make the score 75-72 with four seconds on the clock.
After he missed the second free throw, the Monks secured the
rebound, but Murphy's three-point attempt as time
expired was just short, giving JWU the 75-72 victory.
Saint Joseph's will travel to Mount Ida on Saturday, January 17th
for a 3:00 PM conference contest. The Wildcats will return to
action on Thursday, January 15th when they travel to Mount Ida for
a GNAC contest, starting at 6:00 PM.
