Monks Sail Past Maritime in Season-Opener, 83-57

CASTINE, ME - Senior Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) scored 17 points to lead Saint Joseph's (1-0), which featured five players with double-digit point totals, past Maine Maritime Academy (1-1), 83-57, on Tuesday evening. The Monks shot 51.6% from the floor and were perfect, 12-12, from the free throw line in the team's season-opening triumph.

St. Joe's jumped out to a double-digit lead just minutes into the opening half. The Mariners were able to keep the game within striking distance until the Monks went on a run near the end of the half to take a 20-point lead, 43-23, into intermission.

Saint Joseph's forced 15 turnovers in the first half en route to 21 total, and committed just 13 themselves. The Monks also outworked the Mariners on the glass and held a 35-27 rebounds edge overall, including 14-10 on the offensive side.

For the Monks, Chris Davis ‘11 (New York, NY) was 4-6 from the floor and netted 11 points and Tyler Kelley ‘11 (Saco, ME), with a 5-8 shooting effort, tallied 10 points.

Freshmen Chris Petzy (East Kingston, NH) and Zach O'Brien (Schenectady, NY) chipped in with 10 points apiece in their first collegiate action. O'Brien made five of six shots and chipped in with four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Ray Eatmon ‘10 (Huntington, NY) led the Monks with six rebounds and Murphy added five boards in the win. Scot Vachon ‘09 (Schenectady, NY) dished out five assists and grabbed a pair of steals in the season-opener.

The Mariners were led by Derek DiFrederico (Millinocket, ME), scoring 21 points on 8 for 16 shooting. Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro, ME) chipped in with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Jake Manner (Frankfort, ME) led the hosts with nine rebounds.

Maine Maritime will be back in action on Friday when they play California Maritime in Vallejo, CA. St. Joe's will travel to Biddeford, ME on Saturday to take on the University of New England for a 2:00 PM tip-off.
