NORTHFIELD, VT - The Monks extended their GNAC
winning streak to four games and improved to 13-4 overall, 7-3 in
conference play, with a victory over Norwich University (5-12, 3-7
GNAC) on the road on Thursday evening. Tyler Kelley '11 (Saco, ME)
scored a game-high 16 points and Ray Eatmon '10 (Huntington, NY)
notched his fifth-consecutive double-double with 14 points and 11
boards in the triumph.
Chris Davis ‘11 (New York, NY) also scored 14 points and
Chris Petzy ‘12 (East Kingston, NH) came off the bench and
added nine points on three three-pointers.
Darell Marshall 12 (Dallas, TX) and Joshua Cabrera ‘12
(Providence, RI) led Norwich with 10 points apiece. Israel Guardado
‘10 (El Centro, CA) chipped in a career-high eight points to
go along with a career-best eight rebounds. Antonio Davis ‘12
(Albany, NY) added eight points and six rebounds for Norwich.
Saint Joseph's got off to a quick start, outscoring Norwich 8-0 to
start the game. A 4-2 spurt by the Cadets closed the gap to 10-4
moments later, but the Monks used an 11-4 run to establish a 21-8
lead at the 10:53 mark. Four straight points by Norwich made it
21-12, but a 9-2 burst by the Monks gave the visitors a 30-14 lead
with 6:08 left to play before halftime. The Royal Blue kept their
lead in excess of 12 points throughout the remainder of the opening
stanza, and they took a 39-25 lead into the intermission.
Eatmon led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. Petzy
provided a spark off the bench, scoring all nine of his points in
the opening frame. Guardado paced the Cadets in the first half with
six points and five rebounds.
Saint Joseph's started the second half on a 12-4 run to take a
51-29 lead at the 15:03 mark, and Norwich got no closer than 14
points the rest of the way. The Monks, who never trailed in the
game, extended their lead to as many as 24 points in the second
half en route to the victory.
The Monks shot a blistering 68.0 percent (17-of-25) from the field
in the second half. For the game, the Monks hit 51.5 percent
(34-of-66) of their shots. SJC connected on 9-of-19 three-pointers
(47.4 percent). Norwich, meanwhile, shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66)
from the floor in the game and hit only 16.7 percent (4-of-24) of
its three-point attempts. The Monks held a slim 37-36 rebounding
edge and converted 17 Norwich turnovers into 27 points.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, January 31st, when the
Cadets travel to Providence, RI, to take on GNAC foe Johnson &
Wales at 2:00 PM. St. Joe's will host Emerson College on Saturday
at 3:00 PM.
