STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's men's basketball Head Coach Rob Sanicola '99 has announced that Sean Costigan has been hired as an assistant coach.

Costigan hails from Cheverus High School in Portland where he played for four years under legendary Head Coach Bob Brown. Following high school, He played at the University of Maine at Orono for one season before transferring to Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts where he played for three years under David McLaughlin and was selected as a team captain as a senior.

"We are excited to have Sean join the Saint Joseph's College basketball family," adds Coach Sanicola. "Sean has a tremendous work ethic and is eager to become an outstanding coach. Coming from one of the top Division II programs (Stonehill) and conferences (NE-10) in the country, Sean will bring a fresh set of eyes and ideas to our program."

Costigan graduated from Stonehill in May of 2011 with a B.A. in History. In his three years at as a member of the Skyhawks' basketball program, the team accumulated an outstanding 67-23 record and advanced to the NCAA DII Tournament all three seasons.

"The number one thing we knew when we sat down with Sean is that he has always been a leader and a winner," says Coach Sanicola. "From Cheverus High School, to University of Maine and on to Stonehill, success has always followed. We value that when recruiting student-athletes and we value that when hiring our assistant coaches. Sean will be a great role model for our student-athletes and will do an outstanding job representing our basketball program."

He has worked many camps and clinics over the past few years, including the Stonehill College Basketball Camp, the Cheverus High School Basketball Camp, the Hoop Mountain Basketball Camp and the Pine Tree Basketball Camp.

"Personally I have known Sean since he was a youngster and continue to watch him develop into a great young man," adds Sanicola. "Throughout his life he has been around coaches - including his father –who have provided a foundation for his coaching philosophy. I am excited to work with Sean and help him reach his goals of one day becoming a head coach at the college level."

Costigan currently resides in South Portland, Maine.
