STANDISH, ME – Anna Maria College (8-11, 6-6 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's (13-5, 9-3 GNAC), 53-50, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Monday night. Senior guard Chris Petzy (Kensington, N.H.) paced the Monks with 20 points in a losing effort.

The visiting AMCATS, led by an impressive double-double of 24 points and 11 boards from junior guard Anthony Click (Springfield, Mass.), held at least a share of the lead for the majority of play and used a 9-0 run midway through the second stanza to secure a game-high 11-point (36-25) advantage. The Monks made a late push but it would not be enough as Anna Maria went 4-6 from the free throw line in the final 45 seconds to help seal the upset victory.

St. Joe's shot just 28.1% (16-57) from the floor in the loss – the Monks' lowest success rate since shooting an even 28% (14-50) in an 83-48 loss to St. Xavier on January 3rd, 2001. Also, Anna Maria grabbed 10 steals and forced 13 SJC turnovers with eight blocked shots on the night.

Sophomore guard Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) added 14 points and senior guard Zach O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y.) registered 10 points and seven rebounds for Saint Joseph's. Petzy brought down a team-high eight caroms and junior point guard Julio Vazquez (Waterbury, Conn.) dealt five assists in the loss.

Freshman guard Hugh Daye (Worcester, Mass.) recorded 10 points, five boards, five steals and a pair of assists and senior forward Brad Peterson (North Kingstown, R.I.) posted seven points, six rebounds, five blocked shots, three assists and two steals for the AMCATS.

Overall, St. Joe's shot 29.6% (8-27) from downtown and 90.9% (10-11) from the charity stripe in the loss. Anna Maria shot 42.6% (20-47) from the field, 45.5% (5-11) from three-point distance, and 80% (8-10) from the free throw line on the night.

The Monks held advantages in rebounds (38-28), assists (11-6) and bench points (14-7) in the setback.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 6-1 in the history of the series with Anna Maria College, a new addition to the GNAC this year. Prior to this evening's contest the Monks had not faced the AMCATS since the 1985-86 campaign.

St. Joe's has scored 50 or fewer points in just 21 games in the 41-year history of the program a total of 1,091 contests. The Monks are now 1-20 in such tilts and had not scored as few as 50 points in a GNAC game prior to tonight's result.

Saint Joseph's will look to get back on track with a home contest versus GNAC counterpart Emerson College at 7:00 PM on Thursday. Anna Maria will host Albertus Magnus College, currently the top team in the conference, at 7:00 PM on Thursday.
