STANDISH, ME - Former Saint Joseph's men's basketball great Steve Schuler '94 has been hired as the Women's Basketball Head Coach at Post University, an NCAA DII institution in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Coach Schuler, who skippered the Albertus Magnus College women's team last season, was selected from a pool of applicants during a three-month national search and will be the first full-time women's head coach in women's basketball history at Post.
In his only season as the head coach at Albertus, he led the squad to a 14-12 record - the first winning season in eight years for the program. Schuler guided the team to the best start in program history, with four wins to open the season. Additionally, a pair of players garnered Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Conference accolades at the end of the season.
Prior to his stint as the head coach, he was an assistant on the Albertus Magnus staff for the final three months of the 2010-11 campaign. As a scholastic coach at the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Schuler won 71 games in four seasons and was named the 2008 Connecticut Post Coach of the Year.
Schuler finished his playing career at Saint Joseph's as a two-time NAIA All-America honoree and claimed National Catholic Basketball Tournament All-America accolades following his senior season. One of the most prominent scorers in SJC men's basketball history, Schuler wrapped up his collegiate career ranked seventh on the Monks' all-time scoring list with 1,457 points and currently ranks highly in field goals made (548), field goal percentage (.571), free throws made (334), scoring average (13.5 PPG) and steals (157).
Saint Joseph's posted an astounding 90-28 (.763) record, including a 29-4 (.879) mark in Western Maine Athletic Conference play, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament twice during Schuler's four years on the court. He was inducted into the SJC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.
Schuler earned his bachelor's degree in marketing and management at Saint Joseph's in 1994.
He inherits a program that went 10-16 and 8-11 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play last winter. The Eagles won six of their final eight games and return several key players, including rising senior guard Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.), who averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds en route to earning Third Team All-CACC mention a year ago.
