Casale Named Conference Player of the Year

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College junior guard Jack Casale (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) has been selected as the 2020 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Year, as announced by the league on Monday.

Casale earns the GNAC's top honor and his second-consecutive First Team All-Conference award after finishing his junior campaign as the runaway scoring champion in the conference, averaging 26.0 points per game while shooting 49.9% (221-443) from the field and 36.8% (74-201) from three-point range. Casale was also fifth in the GNAC rebounding (9.2) and sixth among league leaders in assists (3.5).

He also led the GNAC in field goals made (221), free throws made (135), and points (651) and ranked second in defensive rebounds (213) and third in three-pointers made (74) in 2020. Casale finished the year ranked sixth in the conference in total rebounds (230) and eighth in both assists (87) and FT% (79.4%).

The junior guard surpassed the 30-point mark on 10 different occasions and topped 40 points three times. He averaged 34.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists during the Monks' final four regular-season contests, as SJC went 4-0 down the stretch to lock down the No. 5 seed in the GNAC Tournament.

Casale capped the 2019-20 season ranked ninth in NCAA DIII Men's Basketball in scoring average and 11th in total points. He also ranks seventh in defensive rebounds per game (8.52) and 15th in field goals made (221).

During his junior season, Casale posted the second-highest scoring average in program history and notched top-10 numbers in seven other single-season categories, including rebounding average (9.2, 4th), points (651, 5th), three-pointers attempted (201, 6th), free throws made (135, 7th), field goals made (221, 8th), rebounds (230, 9th), field goals attempted (443, 10th), and three-pointers made (74, 10th).

Casale heads into his senior season tied atop the Monks' all-time scoring average list with 20.5 PPG (Carl Howell '99) and currently ranks among the program's career leaders in three-pointers attempted (572, 3rd), rebounding average (7.9, 3rd), three-pointers made (224, 4th), points (1,581, 7th), three-point percentage (39.2%, 8th), field goals attempted (1,115, 9th), field goals made (542, 10th), free-throw percentage (76.7%, 12th), rebounds (612, 14th), and free throws made (273, 14th).

Under the watch of 17th-year Head Coach Rob Sanicola '99 this winter, the Monks went 12-14 with a 6-5 GNAC record en route to claiming the #5 seed in the conference tournament. St. Joe's suffered a season-ending GNAC Quarterfinal loss at #4 Anna Maria College on February 25th.
