Buena Vista Tops Saint Joseph's, 85-69

LINCOLN, Neb. – Buena Vista University (4-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (2-4), 85-69, in a Snyder Classic Tournament contest at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks led for most of the first half and held an 11-point cushion (29-18) after sophomore John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) connected on a pair of freebies with 5:27 before the break. St. Joe's started the second stanza holding a 40-31 lead and clung to the advantage until senior guard Michael Santich (Alamo, Calif.) capped a 13-6 Buena Vista run with a three-pointer to provide the Beavers with a 49-48 edge and 12:39 left in the game.

Saint Joseph's maintained no worse than a two-possession deficit for the subsequent six minutes, but Buena Vista rattled off 10 unanswered points during a three-minute span to secure a 68-56 lead with 5:12 remaining. The Beavers proceeded to make 8-of-11 shots from the floor while going 9-for-12 from the charity stripe while the Monks committed five turnovers during the remainder of the contest.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Buena Vista shot 58.8% (20-34) from the field en route to outscoring Saint Joseph's by a 54-29 margin in the second half.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Frazier netted 19 points off a 5-for-8 three-point shooting performance with five rebounds and three steals
  • Junior Teagan Hynes (York, Maine) was 8-for-11 from the field with 16 points and three assists
  • Senior Camryn Yorke (Auburn, Maine) added 11 points, five boards, and four assists
  • Sophomore Wani Donato (Portland, Maine) and freshman Remijo Wani (Portland, Maine) chipped in with six points apiece

LEADERS – BUENA VISTA:

  • Senior Zane Neubaum (Rockwell City, Iowa) was 11-for-14 from the FT line with a game-high 24 points
  • Senior Gunner Reed (Altura, Minn.) went 9-for-11 from the field with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals
  • Senior Ryan Mendoza (Crystal Lake, Ill.) came off the bench to net 13 points with five caroms
  • Junior Christian Stanislav (Glenwood, Iowa) notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's matchup was the first-ever between Saint Joseph's and Buena Vista – an institution based in Storm Lake, Iowa.
