Monks' Season Comes to an End

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - The Saint Joseph's College Men Soccer team held the lead over Johnson and Wales University for the majority of the game, but the Wildcats scored 3 unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes to claim the victory, 4-3.

JWU got on the board early when Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) scored in the 7th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, which JWU maintained into halftime. St. Joseph's College tied the game at the 51:40 mark on a JWU own goal and took the lead after SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, Mass.) went on a breakaway and put in a shot from five yards out, giving the Monks the 2-1 lead at the 52:49 mark. The Monks took the 3-1 advantage at 71:44 when FY Matt Zinchuk (Bethel, Maine) headed in a throw-in from JR Lane Hubacz (Mapleville, R.I.). The Wildcats responded quickly, however when Jeremiah Schenzel notched his first goal of the game in the 77th minute. Less than a minute later, JWU would tie the game when Schenzel led a breakaway and fed a pass to Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) who put a shot into the lower right corner of the goal, making the score 3-3 at 77:46. The Wildcats' Schenzel headed in a throw in by sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at the 85:53 mark, giving JWU the 4-3 victory.

JWU GK Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made one save while Monks SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) had five saves in the playoff loss.

Saint Joseph's College finishes the year with a 5-11-3 overall record, 3-7-1 in GNAC competition.
