Monks Soar Past Hawks, 4-0

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (10-5-3, 6-2-1 GNAC) defeated Becker College (9-8-1) in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. Doug MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA) netted a goal and an assist and Timothy Davison '12 (Danvers, MA) recorded his first collegiate goal in the regular season finale.

With the tenth win of the season, the Monks break the record for regular season wins. The previous mark of nine wins was set in 2000 when St. Joe's finished the year with a 12-8-1 record and went on to win the Maine Athletic Conference Championship. SJC assistant coach Jeff Yaeger '04 was the starting goalkeeper on the '00 side.

The 6-2-1 conference record places the Monks third in the final league standings and ensures that the Royal Blue will participate in the GNAC playoffs for the second time in as many seasons.

Davison tallied his first score, an unassisted goal, and opened the SJC scoring in the ninth minute. Six minutes later the Monks saw their early lead grow to two goals when Greg Cavanaugh '10 (Haverhill, MA) booted a kick past Becker keeper Christopher Nosek '12 (Lancaster, MA) from the top of the box to notch his second goal of the season. MacCallum was credited with an assist on the play. The 2-0 SJC lead would stand going into the intermission.

Captain Kevin Melega '09 (Easthampton, MA) jumpstarted the Royal Blue offense in the second stanza with his fourth goal of the fall, unassisted, when he blasted a low kick from the top of the box past Nosek.

MacCallum pilfered a Becker pass attempt in the 55th minute and the play resulted in the junior's team-leading 11th goal of the season. The goal capped the game scoring with St. Joe's on top, 4-0.

For the Monks, Will Pike '10 (Gorham, ME) made three saves to post his sixth shutout of the season. Melega paced the SJC offensive effort with six shots in the victory.

Nosek made three saves in 58:50 of play in net for the Hawks while Aaron Fill '10 (Ladner, BC) made one stop in 31:10 of relief duty in the losing effort.

The Monks outshot the Hawks 17-5 and the teams were even in the corner kick category with five apiece.

Saint Joseph's will find out early this week who their opponent will be in the November 1st GNAC Quarterfinal match. GNAC Men's Soccer Standings
