Monks Suffer Overtime Loss in ECAC Opener

NEW LONDON, CT - Third-seeded U.S. Coast Guard Academy (11-8-1, 3-3 NEWMAC) handed sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's (12-7-3, 6-2-1 GNAC) a 1-0 overtime loss in a ECAC Tournament Quarterfinal on Wednesday evening. SJC goalkeeper Will Pike '10 (Gorham, ME) made 10 saves in the season-ending defeat.

Coast Guard senior Peter Deneen's goal in the 100th minutes gave head coach Chris Parsons his 100th career win and propelled the Bears into the semifinal round of the ECAC Tournament.

Deneen has made it a habit of scoring game winners in overtime this season as this was his fourth game winning goal, third in overtime this year.

Coast Guard, making its third straight appearance in the ECAC Tournament and fifth in the last six years, dominated play outshooting St. Joseph's 27-7, but the Bears couldn't find the back of the net in regulation.

Senior David O'Brien picked up a loose ball in the box off a long throw and played it across the face of goal to Deneen who buried it in the back of the net with 51 seconds left in overtime for the win.

Junior Will Pike was solid in goal for the Monks, who where making their first-ever appearance in the ECAC's. Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) and Doug MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA) both recorded three shots in the setback.

Coast Guard junior Tim Olah did not need to make a save to register his sixth shutout of the season as the Bears improved to 9-1-1 at home this season.

The 2008 Monks, led by first-year skipper Joel Bancroft, will be remembered for posting a record-breaking campaign. The team set new program records for winning percentage (.632), longest undefeated streak (eight games), consecutive shutouts (four) and fewest goals allowed (20). The men also tied the top marks in team history in wins (12), assists (32) and shutouts (8) and, with 42 scores, fell one short of tying the team high for goals in a season.

Coast Guard advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2004. The Bears will play at second-seeded Curry on Saturday at 1 p.m. Top-seeded Eastern Connecticut will host fourth-seeded Husson in the other semifinal. The ECAC Championship game will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the highest remaining seed.
