NEWTON, MA - Doug
MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA) scored two goals and
goalkeeper Will Pike '10 (Gorham,
ME) made seven saves to lift #3 seed Saint Joseph's (12-5-3, 6-2-1
GNAC) past #2 Lasell College (12-7, 8-1), 2-0, in a GNAC Semifinal
match on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Monks advance to the
conference championship and will play top-seeded Norwich University
(16-2-1, 8-0-1) on Saturday, November 8th in Northfield, VT, time
TBA.
Saint Joseph's got on the board at 21:10 when Paul
Robins (Cornwall, England) crossed the ball to
MacCallum who scored on a diving header into the
Lasers net.
Despite holding the edge in both shots and corner kick
opportunities, Lasell could not gain control of the game. With ten
minutes remaining in the first period, Lasell's Zach Gagne
(Somerset, MA) flicked a pass to Shane Vinnicombe (Pomfret Center,
CT) who headed the ball for the Lasers best chance at tying the
game before the break. Unfortunately for Lasell, Monks keeper
Will Pike made an incredible
diving stop and the Monks retained their 1-0 lead into the
intermission.
Following the break, Gagne produced yet another great look at net
in a one-on-one challenge with Pike. Gagne
rocketed a shot past Pike, but was just shy of the
goal as the ball hit the post and bounced out of bounds.
Saint Joseph's tandem of Robins to
MacCallum struck again in the 80th minute to
clinch the semi-final victory. Robins assisted as
MacCallum drove a hard shot past Lasell's keeper
Julian Dutton (Madison, CT) for the final goal of the contest.
Both Dutton and Pike played distinguished games in
net for their respective teams. Dutton had 3 notable stops, while
Pike had 7 saves in the shut out.
Will Pike has not allowed a goal in his last 358
minutes in net, dating back to October 23, and the shutout was his
eighth of the season, which is a new SJC men's soccer record.
Previous record-holder and 2008 Saint Joseph's Hall of Fame
inductee Michael Bolanz '00 recorded seven
shutouts in 1998.
The team has pitched four straight shutouts, which is also a new
program record. Twelve wins ties the mark for most in a season with
the 2000 side, which went on to win the Maine Athletic Conference
Championship, the program's only title in 18 seasons.
Doug MacCallum now has fourteen goals on the
season, which ties him with Tim Remington, who netted 14 markers in
1998, for the second-highest goal total in a single-season at Saint
Joseph's. The junior's career goal total now stands at 25, which
places MacCallum in a tie with Matt
Stratton '95 for the most career goals in program
history.
With 33 points this season, MacCallum ties
Remington (1998) for second on the single-season scoring list and
gives him 58 career points, just three behind all-time leader
Mike Herrick '01.
With his pair of helpers in the GNAC Semifinal victory,
Paul Robins has amassed 10 assists in 2008, which
is the most ever by a Monks player in a single-season.
Robins passed Jesse Beer, who
notched nine assists in 2000, with his assist on MacCallum's second
goal of the match.
