Monks Claw Past Wildcats, 2-1

STANDISH, ME - Doug MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA) netted the game-winning tally and added an assist on Kevin Melega's '09 (Easthampton, MA) third goal of the year to help lift the Monks (7-4-3, 4-2-1 GNAC) past GNAC rival Johnson & Wales University (4-11, 3-4) on Saturday afternoon. Will Pike ‘10 (Gorham, ME) made four saves in the victory over the 2007 GNAC Champions.

The win, coupled with a 6-0 Lasell victory over Mount Ida, gives the Monks sole possession of third place in the conference with two GNAC matches remaining on the docket.

Melega started the SJC offense in the 15th minute when he connected on a one-timer off the foot of MacCallum to the low left corner past JWU goalkeeper Joe Ferraro ‘11 (Freehold, NJ).

The Wildcats answered the Melega strike just five minutes later when Scott Kirchner ‘10 (Irvine, CA) blistered a kick from 18 yards out that found the low left corner past a sprawling Pike for an unassisted marker.

Ferraro snuffed MacCallum's bid to provide St. Joe's with a goal advantage in the 29th minute. On an SJC lead pass to his right and MacCallum bearing in from 10 yards, the sophomore goalie left the net to challenge and made an impressive point-blank save to preserve the 1-1 contest.

The stalemate stood until the 57th minute when, after making a save, Pike heaved a football toss downfield to a streaking Paul Robins ‘11 (Cornwall, England) past the midfield line. Robins deftly dished a pass to Michael Sanfilippo ‘12 (Walpole, MA) on the left side. A quick pass to MacCallum followed and he nailed a kick from 10 yards out past a diving Ferraro, who had come out of net to cut down the angle, for the game-winning score. Sanfillippo earned credit for the assist on MacCallum's eighth goal, second game-winner, of the season.

Ferraro made one save in net and Kirchner steered three shots on net for the Wildcats in the losing effort. JWU held a 9-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks in the game.

Melega and MacCallum both posted two shots on goal for the Monks in the physical contest.

Saint Joseph's will host GNAC counterpart Suffolk University on Sunday, October 19th at 3:00 PM while Johnson & Wales will play at MIT on Tuesday, October 21st at 4:00 PM.
